ABOUT THE BOOK:
Kathleen Mallory is an extraordinary wild child turned New York City policewoman. Adopted off the streets as a little girl by a police inspector and his wife, she is still not altogether civilized now that she is a sergeant in the Special Crimes section. With her ferocious intelligence and green gunslinger eyes, Mallory (never Kathleen, never Kathy) operates by her own inner compass of right and wrong, a sense of justice that drives her in unpredictable ways. She is a thing apart. And today, she is a thing possessed. Although more at home in the company of computers than in the company of men, Mallory is propelled onto the street when the body of her adoptive father, Louis Markowitz, is found stabbed in a tenement next to the body of a wealthy Gramercy Park woman. The murders are clearly linked to two other Gramercy Park homicides Markowitz had been investigating, and now his cases become Mallory's, his death her cause. Prowling the streets, sifting through his clues, drawing on his circle of friends and colleagues, she plunges into a netherworld of light and shadow, where people are not what they seem and truth shifts without warning. And a murderer waits who is every bit as wild and unpredictable as she....

I found this book in King O'Malley's Pub in Civic, ACT and registered it as Bookcrossing book.

The book kept me turning the pages. That's why I'm giving it six. However, many times the writing is over-dramatic to the point of corny, and I had to move past that objection before I could enjoy the book. But even though corny, some of the comments made me smile.
Was Mallory blonde or red-haired? I thought I read she was ginger early in the book, but later her hair was described as "glorious blonde". Did I misread?
Mallory drinking the laced tea was stupid. I wasn't convinced she would do it, and she did notice a sweet taste when she hadn't added sugar, but still drank it, to the VERY suspicious urging of the poisoner. Charles waited by himself for the serial killer, without letting anyone know where he was and what he was doing – and he wasn’t even a policeman. Very stupid! Both Mallory and Charles were meant to be intelligent, but these actions were not of intelligent people.
The writing was not strong enough to lead to the conclusion clearly. The path to the serial killer should have been better written.

My kids found this book outside Questacon on January 22 and excitedly brought it to me. It's been a long time since I caught a Bookcrossing book, so I was initially excited too, however, I'm not really into crime fiction, so I haven't read it yet. My parents are stopping by on their way back to Queensland soon, so I shall pass it on to them to release in Brisbane somewhere. Thanks for the review, goldenwattle.
