I first heard of this webcomic about a wombat lost underground via its TV Tropes page (which is well worth checking out, but beware of spoilers), and was delighted to get a copy of the first volume from a friend for Christmas. The story is rather dark from the get-go, with the main character finding herself lost underground, with hidden temples and lost gods turning up as she tries to get home. But she's a stubborn and determined character, and her snarky remarks liven up many of her encounters - such as when she's griping about whoever "magicked up" her tunnel (the only reason she can think of for having gotten so badly lost). As she points out, "a tunnel ought to be built with hard work, know-how, and the occasional bracing timeber. If you try shoring it up with magic, bad things happen."
She does get to the surface, but it isn't the same place where she began her tunnel, and her journey includes finding shelter (there's this cave, its walls covered with images; says Digger, "I suppose no one was ever killed by a cave painting. Except Greataunt Ruby that time, and everyone said that was a fluke."), fighting a hungry hyena ("don't you know not to mess with a sleeping wombat?... We're like biceps with feet."), befriending said hyena (who has problems of its own), then befriending the odd little shadow-child, exploring a huge library in search of directions home - and much, much more. Some events are pretty scary, others quite amusing, and there appears to be a more complex plot going on behind the scenes as well. I enjoyed this very much! There's also a bonus story at the end, "No Unicorns in Heaven" - it's a very entertaining tale about an artist commanded to carve unicorns for the emperor, and then things go rather pear-shaped. There's a lovely little tie-in to the main story, too.
