Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance

This is a tough, complex book. I've read it several times, but never felt I really "got" it. Pirsig is equally at home dissecting philosophical nuances or mechanical problems, neither of which I can grapple with. So I'm in awe of him, which may not be the reaction he was hoping for, because I always feel I'm at a distance from him.
He's a good writer, and he does manage to make most of the combined stories he's telling accessible. And his section on "gumption traps" is just plain brilliant - the world was waiting for someone to define and categorize them. So even though the book continues to frustrate me, I'm glad to have read it, and hope it will find many future readers.
