I loved this book. It was at times sad but mostly funny. Some of the descriptions of people and situations are so good, I had to laugh out loud. I have given it to others to read who also loved the story so have decided to release it for others to enjoy.

From Amazon: In the small village of Edgecombe St. Mary in the English countryside lives Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson’s wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, the Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and regarding her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition?

newgirl360 gave such a glowing review of this book at the December meeting of Wellington Bookcrossers that I couldn't resist 'catching' it despite strong resolutions to release at that meeting rather than catch. It looks good.
It was a delight to have newgirl360 with us as we've missed her since she moved north. Thank you for coming., and please come again soon.

I know that this book was on Catsalive's wishlist and believed that I might have sent it to her because I could not find it anywhere in this house. While packing to attend the Aus/NZ Unconvention in Queenstown I found it so will post it off right away, very much relieved.

The vagaries of fading memory are driving me demented right now.

I didn't write up about it on my PC records of books read but I certainly enjoyed it. Quirky little book with memorable characters.

At first I wasn't sure about it but then it turned into an enjoyable read, even though the author used a lot of clichés and you wanted to punch Roger in the face almost every time he turned up ;-)
