Bought in Baltimore for the January TLC book club
Jan 2012 TLC Book. The story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner, who is drafted in WWII, and on an ill-fated bombing mission, lasts 47 days in a raft at sea, before being captured by the Japanese. The POW portion, where he was ill-treated is rather gruesome, but in the end he is liberated and the book chronicles his life after returning home to the US. The book presents the information as well as it could about life in a POW camp, and as upsetting as the Hiroshima bombing was, I'm left with the impression that Japan would not have surrendered without that push - and all the POWs would have been killed. Since the Allies didn't know where the POW camps were, or that the POWs were enslaved to work in some of the bombing targets, it's a wonder that the POWs weren't killed by the allied forces. A very difficult read because of the subject matter, but very well researched.
A Wishlist RABCK. Enjoy!
Oh, Nancy, you are too kind! I'm sorry to tell you that I did read this book last year, and my husband did, too. Although it was a very disturbing book, I did recommend it to all of my friends and even featured it in my book club discussion group. I'll look for someone with it on their Wishlist and pay it forward. Happy New Year! I do try to keep up with my Wishlist but do slip up sometimes.
I received this as a RABCK and know that you have wanted to read it, so I'm sending it along. Enjoy!
My mom, Valpete, sent this book to me. Will read and pass along.
