I thoroughly enjoyed Akino's "Pet Shop of Horrors" series, and recently found Volume 4 of this series (which has some crossover stories with "Pet Shop"). I liked it so much that I started looking for more volumes, and got this slightly-battered ex-library copy from Better World Books.
The series is about Fuuto, a high school student with some mild psychic abilities that he's pretty much forgotten about - until a strange bird shows up to inform him that he's the reincarnation of a mysterious god-king. Complications: Fuuto doesn't want to buy into this; also, another powerful being has set up an alternate 15-year-old as the god-king, and wants to dispose of Fuuto! A mix of teenage angst/humor/romance and supernatural plotting/violence/humor, with creatures who (as in "Pet Shop") can appear as animals and humans (or humanoids), sometimes incredibly cute and sometimes terrifying. [Fuuta's on the cover of this book with his guardian Garuda in bird form; I'd have preferred him in bare-chested-human form myself {grin}.]
Here, Fuuto is still coming to terms (or failing to) with his new fate, while trying to juggle his regular life with unwanted fame.
The eight volumes:
Volume One
Volume Two
Volume Three
Volume Four
Volume Five
Volume Six
Volume Seven
Volume Eight
