I first read Tigana during the summer of 1993 when I was living and working at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. What a wonderful summer it was! Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me remember who recommend this brilliant book to me. I fell in love with Guy Gavriel Kay's writing at this point. Because of Tigana I now enjoy fantasy novels. Kay has written an incredible story about love, honor and courage that at each re-read never fails to leave me breathless and in tears by the end. I bought this copy on Ebay to share with Bookcrossers because I am simply unable to let go of my original copy.

I’m not usually into starting Bookrays, but for this particular book I will make an exception.

**UPDATE: On January 20, 2004, I mailed CurtAngel a copy of the Epilogue so now no one needs to worry about getting to the end of the book and not being able to read the last few pages!

WHOA what a massive book...well, not really! I got the book today & since this is a ray, it's my first priority to read. Lately, I've been swamped with school & work so I haven't had time to read, but I will be putting all books aside to read this one first. Hopefully I can finish it in a week. Thanks for sharing!

Released on Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Tigana in Bookring, postal release USA.

I sent the book off yesterday to Midwinter. I didn't get a chance to read it and figured I should send it off because I wouldn't be able to read it anytime soon. Sorry for the hold up! :)

I tried really hard to get into this one, but it's just not going to happen, so I'm passing on to CurtAngel today

Note for future readers: Someone's dog appears to have taken out the top corners of the pages of the epilogue. Hope you're not too involved in the story by that point ;)

I've had this for a few days, I just haven't had a chance to journal that I've recieved it. It's been a while since I've settled down and read a good fantasy book. I hope Guy Gavriel Kay's writing captures my imagination as much as it seems to have captured the Jengif's.

Okay, I'll try to not directly give any spoilers, but I might refer to events in such a way that a conclusion could be drawn about how the book goes, which might be something of a spoiler.
I have to say straight off I liked this. However, the I didn't care for the first few chapters. I find thats often the case with fantasy books, I suppose because I'm being introduced to all these new places and names that sound different (but blend together because they sound so different) and new beliefs I've got to puzzle out. The names and beliefs did fill themselves out in my mind, and I think the belief system presented was quite interesting. But then again, I didn't particularly care for the ending either... Maybe Kay isn't good at beginnings and endings, or maybe I just don't like beginnings and endings... :) I was really excited when I realized I was at the end, but when the thing with Catrina happened (the deus ex machina thing) my excitement started to wane. Not that it wasn't handled well and reasonably realistically but... I don't know for some reason I expected "better". The whole ending was kind of a disappointment to me after all of the set up. It's almost like he went, "Jeez, I better end this..." and just whipped out an ending that could have gone to almost any fantasy type story. Well, that's a bit harsh I suppose; its difficult to describe my problems with the ending without giving it away. (BTW there are two pages missing chunks from the Epilogue, but the last paragraph is visible enough to read). There was one big surprise that was like, "Wow, I should have realized that earlier...". That I suppose, made it so the ending I was hoping might come wasn't going to happen.
Okay so what I liked was the middle. And there is a lot of middle. The part that first caught me, and made me think "I've got to know what is going to happen" was the part with Dianora. I liked the details of her court life, and I found her a fascinating character. I guess part of the reason I didn't like the ending is I didn't like the resolution with her. I was practically screaming at the book. I suppose it was reasonable as far as the context of the author, book, and character as presented... But that doesn't mean I have to like it.
The characters are pretty intelligent. I think Kay tried to make strong female characters, and I think he succeded without making them too "spunky". Even the quiet, nice girl was strong in her own way.
Finally, one thing that surpised me was how sexually frank this book was. Not pornographic (though I suppose some might consider it to be with that thing with in the beginning with Devin). In the end I appreciated this because I hate it when books are all cutesy about homosexuality and sex, but it did surprise me. While on the subject, for some reason I liked the thing with the red glove. It wasn't ever explicitly explained, but I suppose it didn't need to be.
Oh and one thing about the Epilogue, for some reason I think that Devin was "blessed" (though I suppose considering what hes been saying he wants to do he could fork...). Is that giving too much away? Its just the Epilogue anyway.
Okay, I'll be contacting the next person and hopefully will have the book on its way again within a week.

I'm overwhelmed with bookrings at the moment, so please be patient!! I'm excited to get a fantasy book, though! It looks very interesting and it just might suck me in!
