Gabaldon mesmerized readers with a love story that spanned two centuries in Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber. This new novel in Gabaldon's highly acclaimed time-travel saga again features intrepid time traveler Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser, the gallant 18th-century Scottish clansman who stole Claire's heart and whose memory will not loosen its hold on her, even across the chasm of centuries.
I am well and truly hooked on this series now and am looking forward to digging into book number four, 'Drums of Autumn' right away. Much of these books is pure fantasy at times, but the fantasy is interwoven with some interesting historical facts and characters. What's up a next? A new life in America, by the sound of it. I dread to think of the dramas Claire, Jamie and the others will be dragged into next.
Have always meant to try out some Diana Gabaldon, but never got around to it. But will have to track down Crossstitch before I do, so may have to hang onto this for a while!
Like Dragonfly in Amber, I consider this trivial escapist rubbish - but fun!
This one was less interesting than the former, as the situations seemed much more contrived.
[Spoiler warning - mouse over to read]
I struggled from fairly on in this book - Claire easily locates Jaimie 20 years after she left him - no huge problem there. But when they go off to retrieve some pirate treasure, Jaimie's nephew happens to be there at the same time as the pirates, and gets kidnapped. Without anything other than a quick glimpse of the ship, Jaimie describes it well enough for his French relative to name it and figure out where it's gone. Maybe I shouldn't complain - one has to suspend one's disbelief when Claire goes back in time 200 years, but it was all a little too fantastic for me.
Will try to take this and Voyager to the convention with me, although given their size, if I'm over my weight limit they'll be the first to be tossed out, probably at the Chch airport!
