"This is the story of Lilian Singer, born on a wild night inthe year of Federation into a stifling household which totally fails to subdue her. Madness, cruelty and sexuality permeate the household but Lilian's sights are set on education, love and - finally - her own transcendent forms of independence. Lilian Singer is, or becomes, that rare being: an eccentric true to her own self whose story reaches out to touch and delight the most discerning reader."

Lilian was an odd character, at times appealing but at times very unappealing. Her 'descent' into her own world and her form of independence seems inescapable and inevitable; although she seems to be happy where she ends up it was hard for me to empathise with her situation.

Wonder where this book has been since January 14, 2012. No matter. I have it now. "Caught" in Trax Cafe at the Wellington Railway Station during a meet-up of Wellington Bookcrossers. This is a new venue we are trying out and I think it passed its initial test.
The food at Trax was quite acceptable; as always the meal on the place next to mine looked more appetizing than my own choice of chips and fried fish bites.
Captainsdoxy had nachos displayed in an original array of wedges shaped like the sun's rays with piles of customary nacho accompaniments including guacamole and cream. Quite Yummy looking. Definitely my choice for next month's meet-up.
Kate Grenville is a respected and clever writer and I'm very much looking forward to reading this.

Decided to take this book with me to Sydney as I think my daughter-in-law and perhaps the older of our two granddaughters might like it. Not sure whether I can persuade either reader to wild release it. We'll see.

Later - edited for typo.
