This is the beautiful and haunting tale of Chinese farmer Wang Lung and his wife, O-Lan. Their struggles for survival and peace are shadowed by the stirrings of revolution in China. This book is wonderfully written in a perfect and spare tone. I had difficulty with the treatment of women, but I know that is how it was in the time and culture in which the story takes place. I also did not care for the ending, although it does seem fitting with the rest of the story.
