Alan Sillitoe, a previous member of the working class, wrote this novel in 1959. It won the Hawthornden Prize for literature and was made into a film in the sixties. The story takes place in Essex, England after the Second World War and deals with a 17-year-old criminal called Smith, who has to live in Borstal. During the time of his imprisonment he is made a long-distance runner. Between Smith and the governor, for Smith the incarnation of so-called proper society, there is a misunderstanding as far as the definition of honesty is concerned. But neither of them is willing to give up his own interpretation of honesty, and finally the situation gets out of control.
It seems to us that Sillitoe wants to give an example of how criminal minds work and to show how different definitions of honesty are adopted by different parts of society. According to our view, the book contains hardly any external action and no identification with the protagonist is possible. Because of that and because of its many details the book soon gets boring. However language-wise it is easy-reading, and contents-wise it is interesting to examine the ways of thinking of a criminal mind. Yet, the fact that the outcome is clear right from the beginning makes it impossible to feel any tension, and so it is no fun reading further on.
