Three short stories which trace the moral terrain of human nature...

Stevenson's famous Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has remained popular ever since its publication in 1886, and the title has become proverbial. The story finds echoes in everyone: the chilling tale of the respectable Jekyll and his infernal alter ego, Mr. Hyde, explores the potential each person has for bestiality and evil. It is a measure of Stevenson's success that he demonstrates the seductiveness as well as the horror of a life freed from all moral restraint.

The Beach of Falesá (printed here in its original, uncensored form) and The Ebb-Tide are later stories on the same theme. Both are set in the Pacifc islands. The first suggests that good can manifest itself where society's rules are not in force. The second is a sophisticated portrayal of expatriate colonials struggling with the opposing sides of their nature. Together, the idicate an increasingly subtle apprehension and representation of human behaviour.

I was very impressed with the stories in this book. I appreciate the themes these stories explored. The characters were very realistic, even though some were two people at once. I especially enjoyed The Beach of Falesá. I'm glad I had the chance to read this.

Thank you for sharing this book, kristamd!

Planning to reread this one, but then we'll see about a bookring. More info to follow.

Journal Entry 6 by snarkhunting from Quincy, Massachusetts USA on Friday, August 21, 2009
I've been getting swamped with bookrings and bookrays, and didn't get the chance to reread this yet, but I decided to organize a bookring anyway. (See this thread.) Here's our finalized shipping order:

sothisdhampir (US - will ship anywhere)
ajsmom (Canada - will ship anywhere)
wickedlazy (UK - no preference stated)
Lottiotta (UK - will ship anywhere)
bearyfriend (Singapore - will ship anywhere)

...then back home for a wild release...

I think most of us know how these things work, but just in case, here's how it goes. First, please make a journal entry when you receive the book. Then take your time and enjoy the book. (Usually I recommend keeping the book for no longer than a month, but if you find that it's taking you a little longer to finish the book, just keep us updated.) When you're nearing the end of the book, please send the next person in line a PM to request shipping information. When you've finished the book, please make another entry to let us know what you thought and to let us know you're ready to mail the book along to the next participant. Finally, send the book out and make release notes.

If it's possible, be kind to the earth by reusing the envelope the book arrived in!

Happy reading, and Happy Bookcrossing!

Got it! :) I should be able to start it in a few days, thank you! :)

Journal Entry 9 by sothisdhampir from Fort Worth, Texas USA on Monday, October 26, 2009
Well, I had a bit of a hard to time keeping intrested in this book. That happens once in a while with the classics, sometimes the language or the tone of the writing just doesn't rub right with me. For the most part I appericated the message the story was trying to convey, but it seemed to fall a little flat and anti-climatic with me. I had a time getting through just Jekyll and Hyde so I didn't read the other ones, plus I am just swamped with bookrays. :)

I will message the next in line as soon as I know I have an ETA for when I can make my next trip to the post office. :)

Did I forget to make a JE? I think I did!! I liked it, am glad I finally read it and now *actually* know the story of Jekyll and Hyde. Did I enjoy it? I'd give it 7 stars out of 10. The introduction was fascinating though!

Safely received. I will start on it tonight, but I sometimes struggle with the classics - depends how "wordy" it is! Yes I know, books have words in ;)

I'm so sorry everyone that I've kept this book for such a long time.

I've read the main story and The Beach of Flesa and really enjoy RLS's writing.

Journal Entry 17 by Lottiotta from Aberdovey, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, April 10, 2010
How pleasing, thanks so much wickedlazy for posting this to me. :) I'm looking forward to it, though I also received another bookring this morning and I'm halfway through another bookring, The Godfather. I will get to it ASAP. :) In the mean time, you can see what I'm currently reading on My Bookshelf, and if you want to see how far through I am and/or which page I'm on you can check out my GoodReads page. :)

Thank you again!

Started this last night, so far so good. :)

4th May 2010
Finished this last night, and really enjoyed it. The creepy build-up was wicked, really kept me guessing, even though the ending is famous the details had passed me by so that was fun. I've PMed bearyfriend for an address, and I will let you all know when I'm sending it off.

Book arrived safely 2 days ago. I will find a day to start reading and once done will send it back to the book owner. Have heard of the popular Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde but do not know which is the bad one, will read and find out. Thanks Lottie for sending it to me.

Journal Entry 20 by bearyfriend at Singapore, Singapore Singapore on Thursday, December 23, 2010
Thanks for the add, book is now travelling back to the ring host. I'm sorry for keeping it so long, as I tried reading the first time, and couldn't get into it, so kept it for quite a while before trying again. I'm glad I finished reading about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, though not the other 2 stories. It's indeed a strange case. What came to mind was the movie 'Face Off' by Nicholas Cage, but that was just the face change, but this is like metaphorsing into another person by drinking the potion. What I'm not so sure was did Mr Hyde really exist, or all along it was actually Dr Jekyll from the start. I tried The Beach of Falesa but thought would better sent it off else it's going to take months again. Thanks for sharing, I'm glad I finally know about this story. Merry Christmas 2010 to all and a Happy New Year 2011. Cheers.

Journal Entry 21 by snarkhunting at Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, January 17, 2011
Well, it looks like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have made it back to the United States. I wanted to say thank you to bearyfriend for the postcard and coaster (they both made me smile), and to all of you who participated in this bookring.

I've been trying my best to get a few more people from the area interested in reading. Judging by the reactions this book elicited, it might not be the one with which to do that. :)

I'll just list the book as available until I can come up with suitable release plans. (Or if anyone would like to stake a claim...)

Happy Bookcrossing, everyone!

I'm afraid I lost a small box of books during a recent move, and unfortunately, I think this (along with a few other Bookcrossing books) was part of that box! I'm making release notes for those that might be out there somewhere. I hope whoever finds them will enjoy them, and I look forward to hearing your stories.
