The narrator is an unnamed porn star, egotist and narcist who one day drives under influence of drugs and alcohol into a ravine. The car catches fire, tips eventually into a creek; the driver survives, however badly burnt. His good looks are gone, even his trade mark cock fell victim to the fiery inferno: the former model is a mere ugly zombie who rues that he did not die in the accident.
In the hospital he gets a visit from a woman from thr psychiatric ward. Marianne Engel (!) is a beautiful, successful (rich) but schizophrenic sculptress who believes that the burned man is her reincarnated lover from her former life as a nun in the medieval monastery of Engelthal. He also was burned back then, a mercenary, hit by a burning arrow, brought to the nuns.to die. Marianne however, the young novice, nursed him back to health. They fell in love and fled together. The medieval romance is told by Marianne in course of the novel. In the present time the second love story unfolds between Marianne and the burned man, this time only platonic of course. After his long hospital stay, she takes him in, cares for him and pays all his medical bills.
I felt a bit uneasy with Marianne's fatal devotedness to this spineless, burned coward. He is not worth it. No man is worth to die for. He could have saved Marianne at the end, he didn't. Still an egomaniac, still an idiot, now also ugly. Well, eventually he will follow her to be reunited in death. What a macabre love story! But gripping enough due the many medieval and side tales.
