LOVED the fact that I not only got to (temporarily) give a home to a traveling book, but I also got to discover it in the Red Wood (Marin co) Little Free Library! So my reading had an auspicious beginning. By the time I got to page 34, I was convinced Penelope Lively wrote this actual book TO me, FOR me, and ABOUT me...*grin. Well, maybe not quite so self-centered as all that, but take this passage for example: "Forever, reading has been central, the necessary fix, the support system. Her life has been informed by reading. She has read not just for distraction, sustenance, to pass the time, but she has read in a state of primal innocence, reading for enlightenment, for instruction, even." BINGO. Twenty pages later or so, on page 58, she covers the gradual deterioration of old age: "You slide, in old age, into a state of perpetual diffidence, of unspoken apology. You walk more slowly than normal people, you are obliged to say "what?" too often, ... You can use a computer, just about, and cope with a mobile, but with such slow deliberation that the watching young are wincing." DOUBLE BINGO. Tucked late into the book, hidden among the story-line, Charlotte "reflects upon the past, she reflects--with irritation---upon the present. The past is not gone, but is now that abiding ballast without which she would capsize. ... The present is less inviting, as material for reflection. The present is a matter of nagging concerns, of hour-to-hour negotiations." BLACKOUT.

I haven't even mentioned the plot, which is a well-knit series of events that start with a simple mugging, which causes a broken hip, which causes a convalescence with a daughter, which causes a missed day at work, which...etc. By the end of the story, I knew everyone, suffered or found joy as the case may be with each, and was really sorry to say goodbye. THANK YOU...silverstarry. THANK YOU...Red Wood Little Free Library. THANK YOU Penelopy Lively. I'm grateful. SuzMarin

I will release this to the 123 Lansdale, Fairfax, Little Free Library on Friday, Sept 18, unless one of my seven bookgroup members grabs it Thursday night.
