I enjoyed this book more than "Tears of the Giraffe." I don't know why but I had to push myself to finish "Giraffe" but this one I just tore through. It's not really much of a mystery, there's more narrative about the main characters - Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi, and Mr J.L.B. Matekoni as well as the foster children. Lots of changes in everyone's lives, which makes for a good story. I was a bit dissatified with the ending as it didn't wrap everything up nicely for me, but I'm hoping that some of those loose ends will be dealt with in "The Kalahari Typing School for Men."

The thumps overhead are not helping my headache any, I am still sitting in the near dark for I would rather journal my books than finish replacing my lightbulbs.

Very cute pic of bookcrossing book holding a boomerang! I like and very thankful to receive this new book!

Thank you again!

So still got more on the tiny white van but yes there was more character development of the secretary, precious, Mr J L B Matekoni (what is his first name? did it come up in the first book? I have forgotten - John? Jakob? Julian?). Won't reveal his but an interesting turn but I did like the secretary's relationship with the two lazy apprentices at the garage.

And that van is still tiny and white :P but looking forward to the next one. Will hand over to littlemave on Tuesday at cocktails.

I do so enjoy these books, little episodes of short stories all brought together towards the end. Mma Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only lady detective is as intuitive as ever and now with her assistant detective/secretary Mma Makutsi, is making her reputation stick. With the absence of Mr J.L.B. Matekoni through most of the book, Mma Makutsi is making her presence felt not only at the Agency but also at the garage, which she has taken under her wing and transformed, including the aforementioned (by BookFrog) apprentices!!
I like the way that Mma Ramotswe always refers to herself as a "traditionally built woman" and is not afraid to eat a few doughnuts!

I will pass this on to FuSHMuSH when next I see her. Many thanks Marcinyc - I look forward to the next one.

Received from Littlemave last night at meetup at the Arthouse Hotel. I probably won't get to it for a week or so. However, it looks like a quick and easy read so I won't delay it for too long :D.

Another enjoyable, easy read.

My favourite paragraph:
"She was a traditionally built lady, after all, and she did not have to worry about dress size, unlike those poor, neurotic people who were always looking in mirrors thinking that they were too big. What was too big, anyway? Who was to tell another person what size they should be? It was a form of dictatorship, by the thin, and she was not having any of it. If these thin people became any more insistent, then the more generously sized people would just have to sit on them. Yes, that would teach them! Hah!"

I laughed out loud when I read that. I'll have to go and find some skinny people to sit on!

I'll post it to Tramgirl by the end of this week.

I quite liked this book, it was an easy read (like the others) and I liked the fact that we got to know more about the secretary Mma Makutsi and the other characters. Each little story was good and I always like the fact that things are neatly wrapped up at the end, you aren't left hanging for the next book!!

This book is off to Hawkette when we catch up for dinner, hopefully next week!

These books are still so cute! It's the only word for it! I adore Mma Ramotswe!

This novel of the series was quite feminist, in it's cute and innocent ways. Much of what is good and bad for women, and how men treat women. The witty philosophy always brings a smile.

More character development in this one, and then the Detective Agency finally gets a case halfway through the book! Each of the main players in these stories are getting stronger and stronger now.

I can't let this gem go without being forgotten - although there are so many throughout the book...
'There was always time for the breaking of difficult news, and one had to wait for one's moment. Men usually let their defences down now and then, and the art of being a successful woman, and beating men at their own game, was to wait for your moment. When that moment arrived, you could manipulate a man with very little difficulty. But you had to wait.' (p.17)

There are several things happening at the end of this one that will obviously carry on to the next one. Looking forward to the next installment!

Another delightful story intertwining morality and culture as everyday life difficulties and mysteries are settled, even if not always solved. I look forward to the next in the series.
Thank you MarciNYC for sharing this and it will be on its journey to Nikel27 tomorrow.

I've been home today with a cold/sinus infection and this novel kept me company along with a big pot of tea.
I liked it...I really liked getting to know MMa Makutsi better and seeing her strength and leadership style...I think Precious has to watch out for her - she is very ambitious and sure of herself.
Not sure I understand what is going on with J.L.B. Maketoni..and will they get married?
I guess I'll just have to read the next installment to find out!

Thanks for sharing with me..this will be on its way to PhotoGirl04 as soon as I get an address.

PhotoGirl and I were going to meet so I could hand the book off to her as she only lives a few blocks from me...but I've not heard from her in a few weeks...so I'm going to go ahead and mail it tomorrow so I'm not holding up the ring any longer. Enjoy!
