Despite it being set amid a terrible and shameful part of history, this is an uplifting novel. It is about the fact that people can be kind to others when there is no benefit to themselves. It is about the fact that the love of family is so powerful, so strong, that it can move mountains and defy corrupt systems.

Found on the OBCZ shelves at Riddik Cafe during our first meetup of the year. I read this novel a few years back for a book group and liked it very very much. It's slow and profound and beautiful. I will check if anyone has it on their wishlist or might reserve it for the next round of OZ VBB.
